🚑 A pediatric cardiac arrest completely changed the trajectory of my personal and professional life.

If you are new to my world, I am an emergency physician. In the fall of 2017, a beautiful young little girl, about 3 months old, arrived in my emergency department in cardiac arrest.

But despite all of my best efforts and my team’s best efforts, the little girl died.

My head swirled with all kinds of emotions, but before I even had a moment to grieve with the mother… my nurses (many of them mothers themselves)… even before I had time to process my own emotions, I had to move on to the next patient.

How could I have time for myself when at any given moment I was being pulled in 5 different directions? I felt like a circus act trying to keep the spinning plates from falling.

Instead of having a moment with myself, my thoughts were occupied with charting in the electronic medical records for my next patient…

That night, I came to my office and typed the words “physician burnout” into Google. I was looking for answers, I was looking for a community, I was looking for something, anything to get me away from the dark abyss of burnout. I had no one to turn to.

What was amazing though, as I started sharing my story with friends and colleagues, they shared a similar horror story, yet they, too, were sailing aimlessly in these uncertain waters. They were surely not thriving in medicine or at home. In fact, they were just barely keeping their head above water. I bet you can relate to a lot of what I am saying. These past years have surely been a challenge for many of us.
